Intel (INTC) just handed the semiconductor sector a preview of what’s driving the AI trade in mid-2026 – and it wasn’t subtle.

A blowout quarter, a stock that fell anyway, and a supply chain that can’t keep pace with demand. All of it matters for Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), which reports its own second-quarter results after market close on August 4.

Here’s what Intel’s numbers actually signal about the read-through to AMD stock – and where the comparison breaks down.

The demand story looks set to repeat

Intel’s headline number was a 25% year-over-year revenue jump to $16.13 billion, powered by a 59% surge in Data Center and AI revenue to $6.3 billion.

CEO Lip-Bu Tan was blunt about the driver: demand is outpacing what the company can physically produce, with what he called some of the most severe “supply constraints” the industry has faced across wafers, memory and advanced packaging.

That dynamic isn’t really unique to Intel. AMD has guided for roughly $11.2 billion in Q2 revenue, implying about 46% year-over-year growth, and enters its report fresh off an Advancing AI 2026 event where it detailed its Instinct MI400-series accelerators, Helios rack-scale systems, and a new compute partnership with Anthropic.

If server and AI-chip demand is as unmet as Intel described, Advanced Micro Devices’ own data-center segment should reflect similar strength.

The capex question is where AMD faces its own test

Intel’s beat didn’t translate into a lasting stock rally.

Shares popped nearly 13% after hours before reversing and closing lower by Friday, falling beneath $100, as investors fixated on Intel lifting 2026 capital spending above $20 billion – with more increases flagged for 2027.

Analysts mostly held their ratings steady even after raising price targets, signaling skepticism about how quickly that spending converts to returns.

Advanced Micro Devices faces a version of the same scrutiny.

Its build-out of Helios infrastructure and MI400-series production capacity is capital-intensive, and with AMD stock trading at a premium, investors will likely apply the same lens: solid growth numbers may not be enough if spending guidance overshadows them, the way it did for Intel just days ago.

Why Intel, AMD comparison only goes so far

Still, treating Intel’s report as a clean template for AMD has limits.

Intel’s beat came against a lower bar – Wall Street held a mostly Hold-rated consensus heading into the print, reflecting lingering doubt about its turnaround.

AMD carries a different reputation, having beaten estimates in nearly all of its recent quarters, meaning expectations are already elevated.

Its data-center business also skews toward GPUs and AI accelerators rather than Intel’s CPU-heavy mix, a distinction that matters given how differently investors are pricing AI infrastructure exposure right now.

The real test on August 4 won’t just be whether AMD beats – it will be whether the market rewards it differently than it rewarded Intel.
