Why SoundHound stock’s post-earnings rally is proving unsustainable

SoundHound (SOUN) shares are ripping higher on Thursday morning after the company reported blowout Q2 earnings and issued upbeat guidance that forced short sellers to cover their positions.

Still, peeling back the layers of SOUN’s quarterly print reveals several headwinds and pockets of operational weakness that warrant taking at least some profits off the table.

Despite the post-earnings rally, SoundHound stock remains down some 25% year-to-date.

The non-GAAP illusion could hit SoundHound stock

While bulls would point to a surprise per-share profit of $0.02 in the second quarter, caution is still warranted in playing SOUN shares primarily because it relied heavily on non-GAAP adjustments.

In Q2, the AI-enabled voice recognition specialist lost $42.8 million on a GAAP basis, compared to a non-GAAP net loss of just $9 million.

This massive gap between the two is mostly due to $21 million in stock-based compensation (SBC) and $11 million in depreciation/amortization.

Paying out more than 33% of quarterly sales in SBC means investors are absorbing ongoing share dilution to fund the operational beat.

What’s also worth mentioning is that the post-earnings surge helped SoundHound break above its major moving averages (MAs), so part of today’s rally is related to algorithmic buying as well.

Accelerating cash burn remains an overhang

Conservative investors should take profit in SoundHound shares at current levels also because cash generation – despite topline growth – worsened in fiscal Q2.

In the first six months of 2026, the company’s operating cash “outflow” reached $-60 million – up significantly from -$43.7 million during the same period last year.

Crucially, SOUN ended the quarter with total cash reserves of roughly $203 million.

At about a $30 million per quarter operating cash burn rate, its cash runway remains a focal point if topline growth decelerates or integration outlays rise.

Investors should also note that the firm’s relative strength index (RSI) – at the intraday high – was seen in the mid-60s, indicating the AI stock is approaching “overbought” territory.

Margin stagnation warrants unloading SOUN shares

Finally, SoundHound’s non-GAAP adjusted margin remained essentially flat at 58.4%.

For a high-multiple pure-play AI software company, target gross margins are generally expected near 70%.

The lack of non-GAAP margin expansion despite 45% sales growth suggests cloud infrastructure, inferencing compute cost, and third-party model licensing fees are scaling alongside revenue rather than yielding immediate operating leverage.

Importantly, management noted that the lifted full-year outlook ($230 million to $260 million) will be adjusted further once the acquisition of LivePerson closes later this year.

Integrating a large customer service legacy platform that has historically struggled with declining organic growth and legacy tech debt carries execution risks, potential customer churn during migration, and near-term margin dilution.

That said, Wall Street continues to rate SOUN stock at Overweight with a bullish mean price target of $12.
