Singaporean Malone Lam pleads guilty over massive US crypto heist; Singapore open to considering chemical castration for sex offenders: Singapore live news

It was a whirlwind few days for legal developments in Singapore, headlined by the admission of guilt from citizen Malone Lam in a United States court. Lam pleaded guilty on Tuesday to racketeering conspiracy, admitting his central role in orchestrating a massive cryptocurrency theft ring. The scale of the heist has left him facing a daunting maximum prison sentence of twenty years as American authorities move forward with the case.

Back home, the government is signaling a potential shift toward more aggressive measures to combat violent crime. Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam revealed in a written parliamentary response that Singapore remains open to implementing chemical castration for sex offenders. While such a move would be significant, the minister clarified that any decision would depend on clear evidence demonstrating that the practice effectively reduces recidivism and prevents future crimes.

These judicial updates coincide with broader efforts by Parliament to tighten security against digital fraud. New legislation passed on Wednesday specifically targets online account mules who facilitate scams through platforms like TikTok, Telegram, and Carousell. Under these strict new laws, those providing accounts to criminals could face up to three years in prison, heavy fines, and corporal punishment via caning. Furthermore, online service providers failing to comply with anti scam directives now face staggering fines of up to ten million dollars.

Beyond the courtroom and legislative halls, other stories gripped the nation this week. In the arts community, stars like Gurmit Singh and Suhaimi Yusof rallied around rapper Sheikh Haikel following his battle with stage four colon cancer, sharing emotional reflections on friendship and resilience. Meanwhile, motorists faced further financial strain as Certificate of Entitlement prices climbed again, with Category A premiums hitting a fresh record of over one hundred thirty three thousand dollars.
