Stocks rise as oil and yields ease to start week: Live updates

Wall Street opened the week on a positive note Monday as investors sought to bounce back from a disappointing previous session. All three major indices moved into the green, with the Nasdaq Composite leading the way with a gain of 0.9 percent, followed by the S&P 500 climbing 0.6 percent and the Dow Jones Industrial Average adding roughly 153 points. This recovery follows a particularly rough stretch for the Dow, which suffered its worst weekly performance since March during the prior five trading days.

Much of Monday’s optimism was fueled by a dip in both oil prices and Treasury yields. U.S. crude fell 3 percent to settle slightly above 96 dollars per barrel, while international Brent benchmarks saw similar declines despite escalating tensions in the Middle East. Markets seem to be weighing Recent Houthi missile attacks against potential diplomatic breakthroughs, especially after President Donald Trump indicated he might be open to meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during this week’s UN General Assembly. As energy costs eased, Treasury yields also softened, providing some relief to a market currently grappling with sticky inflation and recent interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve.

The technology sector provided significant momentum for the rally, specifically within the artificial intelligence space. Chipmakers Intel and Advanced Micro Devices both surged 8 percent, with AMD hitting an all-time high following reports that cloud providers are raising prices for certain processors. Other firms like Ciena and Accenture also saw gains tied to their roles in building AI infrastructure and partnerships with model developers like Anthropic. Beyond tech, cryptocurrency enthusiasts celebrated as Bitcoin hit levels not seen since January, lifting related stocks like Coinbase.

Looking ahead, economists warn that any stability in oil remains fragile due to ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, which continue to threaten global fuel supplies. These volatility concerns set a high stakes stage for an upcoming summit between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, where discussions on tariffs and critical minerals are expected to take center stage. For now, however, traders are embracing a moment of respite as easing commodity prices provide temporary breathing room for equity markets.
