Stock futures flat after soaring Treasury yields trigger market sell-off: Live updates

Stock futures remained largely flat early Thursday morning as investors attempted to find their footing following a sharp market sell off triggered by skyrocketing Treasury yields. The volatility comes as traders increasingly anticipate another interest rate hike from the Federal Reserve in October, with the probability of such a move jumping significantly over the past week. This shift follows a period where indices like the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite suffered notable losses during regular trading hours, snapping several winning streaks for tech heavy stocks.

The primary driver behind the unrest has been the surge in the benchmark 10 year Treasury note yield, which hit levels not seen since 2007. These rising yields typically signal higher borrowing costs for consumers and businesses alike, putting additional pressure on households already grappling with expensive fuel prices. Analysts suggest that surprisingly strong business activity data from the U.S., while normally positive, may actually provide the Federal Reserve with more room to raise rates to combat persistent inflation fueled by supply chain bottlenecks and energy costs.

The ripple effects of these U.S. trends reached across the globe, pushing Japanese government bond yields to thirty year highs and leaving Asia Pacific markets mixed. While Japan’s Nikkei 225 saw some gains after a long holiday break, other regional benchmarks in China, Hong Kong, and Australia struggled under the weight of global economic uncertainty and simmering geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Investors are also closely monitoring potential diplomatic meetings between leaders of the U.S. and China for any hints regarding future trade relations.

Looking ahead toward Thursday’s session, Wall Street remains focused on upcoming employment data through weekly jobless claims to gauge the actual health of the labor market. Corporate earnings will also take center stage as shareholders await reports from major players including Costco Wholesale and Darden Restaurants. Meanwhile, oil prices remain volatile as traders balance news of increased imports in Asia against ongoing instabilities involving Iran and Israel.
