SpaceX reached a pivotal milestone on Monday morning when its Starship rocket successfully achieved orbital velocity for the first time. Launching from the company’s private spaceport in Starbase, Texas, the 407 foot tall vehicle roared into the sky fueled by 33 methane powered Raptor engines. While previous test flights had come tantalizingly close to orbit, they were intentionally designed as suborbital trajectories to ensure the spacecraft would naturally fall back to Earth. This fourteenth flight changed that strategy, pushing the massive upper stage just far enough to break free of gravity’s immediate pull and complete a full lap around the planet.
The journey was not without its tension. During the ascent, one of the Raptor engines on the upper stage shut down prematurely, leading mission controllers to briefly consider aborting the orbital insertion burn. There was genuine concern among engineers that a failure could leave the hundred ton vessel stranded in orbit, potentially risking an uncontrolled reentry. However after verifying that the necessary steering engines were fully operational, SpaceX proceeded with a nineteen second burn that provided the final nudge of speed required to stabilize the craft at an altitude of roughly 171 miles.
Once in orbit, Starship proved its utility as a commercial delivery vehicle by deploying twenty six of SpaceX’s latest generation Starlink V3 broadband satellites. These new units are too large to fit within the fairings of the reliable Falcon 9 rocket, making Starship’s cavernous cargo bay essential for their transport. In a sequence described as resembling a Pez dispenser, a complex system of pulleys and cables ejected the flat packed satellites one by one into space. Unlike previous attempts where experimental hardware burned up upon reentry, these satellites are now positioned to expand Elon Musk’s global internet network.
The flight concluded with a coordinated series of maneuvers typical of recent tests. The Super Heavy booster stage detached shortly after liftoff and performed a high altitude turnaround before making a controlled splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico. Meanwhile, the upper stage completed its historic orbit before beginning its descent toward a planned landing zone in the Indian Ocean. By overcoming technical glitches mid flight and delivering oversized payloads to orbit, SpaceX has moved Starship from an experimental prototype closer to becoming an operational pillar of modern space logistics.
