India readies $25 billion for Deep Tech investment as U.S. and China race ahead

India is aggressively positioning itself to become a heavyweight in the global technological landscape, prepping a massive 25 billion dollar war chest to fuel its deep tech ecosystem. This strategic pivot comes as New Delhi seeks to reduce its precarious dependence on foreign frontier technologies, particularly as the United States and China continue to dominate fields like artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and space exploration. According to Rajat Tandon, president of the Indian Venture and Alternative Capital Association, the initiative involves an 11 billion dollar commitment from the government through the Research Development Infrastructure Fund, which will be mirrored by private equity and venture capital contributions.

The urgency behind this financial surge is driven largely by volatile geopolitics. With growing suspicions surrounding Chinese hardware and increasingly strict export controls from Washington, Indian officials have come to view homegrown innovation not just as an economic goal but as a matter of national security. Recent instances where U.S.-based firms restricted access to cutting edge AI models for foreign nationals served as a wake up call that critical technology could be severed at any moment. Consequently, industry experts suggest that trade tariffs and external restrictions are ironically acting as catalysts for India to build its own resilient infrastructure.

Despite being in a nascent stage compared to American giants, India’s deep tech scene is showing signs of rapid maturity. The rise of several new unicorns in sectors ranging from sovereign AI to aerospace suggests that the country possesses the necessary raw talent and intellectual curiosity to compete globally. Investors describe current opportunities in India as an open candy store, noting that many startups are finally transitioning from theoretical prototypes to viable commercial products. In fact, recent data indicates that almost every major fund in the country is now allocating capital toward deep tech, marking record high levels of investment even while general startup funding has dipped elsewhere.

However, significant hurdles remain before India can truly close the gap with the U.S., where funding totals dwarf those found in Mumbai or Bengaluru. The primary obstacle is a shortage of domestic heavy hitters capable of writing large scaling checks. While early seed funding is plentiful, there remains a glaring deficit of investors willing or able to provide checks exceeding 10 million dollars for projects with long gestation periods. For India to move beyond promising starts and produce genuine global champions, leadership believes that wealthy families and high net worth individuals must step up their appetite for risk in these complex scientific ventures.
