A startup with grand ambitions to revitalize the nuclear industry is planning a massive energy and technology hub on thousands of acres of public land in Utah. Known as Project Beehive, the proposal by Valar Atomics envisions the installation of roughly 456 small modular reactors across more than 9,000 acres managed by the Bureau of Land Management near Price. These reactors would power sprawling data centers and generate approximately 9.6 gigawatts of electricity, a staggering amount given that the entire state of Utah typically produces only about 4 gigawatts on average.
The project represents a fundamental shift in how nuclear power is deployed, moving away from singular, multi-billion dollar plants toward mass produced units that act like giant batteries. If approved, nonnuclear construction could begin as early as the end of this year, with the first reactors potentially coming online by 2028 and full completion by 2032. Beyond electricity for data chips, the site would include facilities for producing nuclear fuel and managing radioactive waste, marking an unprecedented scale for private industrial use of federal lands.
Valar Atomics CEO Isaiah Taylor has positioned himself as a key player in a broader push to make nuclear power central to American infrastructure again. His company has benefited significantly from recent regulatory reforms under the Trump administration intended to fast track small reactor testing. Earlier this year, Valar reached a major milestone when it successfully used a test reactor to power a single Nvidia microchip in the Utah desert, demonstrating a proof of concept that they hope will eventually scale into this massive regional complex.
However, the sheer size and nature of Project Beehive have sparked immediate backlash from environmental advocates and local residents. Critics argue that placing hundreds of reactors on public wilderness is an alarming precedent and express concern over the long term impact on the landscape and safety. While the Bureau of Land Management has confirmed it is reviewing the application for completeness and promising future public input, opponents say they are racing to raise awareness before the project becomes an irreversible reality in the high desert.
