Stock futures inch higher as traders weather latest rise in Treasury yields: Live updates

Wall Street is showing signs of resilience early Wednesday morning as stock futures edge higher, despite a volatile period marked by surging Treasury yields. Contracts for the Dow Jones Industrial Average lead the modest climb, followed closely by the S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100. This slight rebound comes after a bruising session where equities buckled under the weight of bond yields hitting multi-decade peaks, including a thirty year Treasury yield that crossed five point six percent for the first time since 2002.

Investors seem to be finding some breathing room thanks to recent remarks from New York Federal Reserve President John Williams. By suggesting there is no immediate urgency to rush into further rate hikes before the October meeting, Williams helped soothe market nerves. This shift in tone is already reflecting in trader expectations, with the probability of a quarter point rate hike next month dropping significantly from seventy one percent on Monday to just forty nine percent today.

However, caution remains the dominant theme as traders prepare for the release of the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index later today. As the Federal Reserve’s favorite measure of inflation, this report will likely dictate whether the current optimism holds or if tightened financial conditions continue to empower those betting on a market downturn. With borrowing costs already biting through record high mortgage rates, any surprise in inflation data could quickly erase these early gains.

Across the globe, Asian markets provided a mixed backdrop to start the day. While Japan saw strong gains in both the Nikkei and Topix indices, other regions remained fragmented as they weighed geopolitical tensions and shifting trade dynamics between China and Europe. Meanwhile, Chinese industrial data offered a glimmer of hope, showing that factory activity snapped a two month losing streak thanks to a surge in high tech manufacturing and AI hardware demands.
