A jury in New York has found Jonathan Spalletta, a 36 year old resident of Rockville, Maryland, guilty of orchestrating a massive digital theft that crippled a cryptocurrency exchange. Following a six day trial, Spalletta was convicted on charges of computer fraud and money laundering tied to his exploitation of software bugs within the Uranium Finance platform back in April 2021.
Prosecutors detailed how Spalletta struck twice in a single month, first siphoning off 1.4 million dollars before returning for a far larger haul. During the second breach, he managed to extract over 53 million dollars from the company’s liquidity pools through a coding error. The scale of the theft was so severe that Uranium Finance was forced to shut down entirely because it simply lacked the funds to continue operating.
The evidence against Spalletta included damning messages where he bragged about performing a crypto heist and dismissed the currency as fake internet money. Rather than investing his windfall traditionally, court records show he spent large sums on high end collectibles, specifically acquiring rare Pokemon and Magic the Gathering cards worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
While authorities have already recovered approximately 31 million dollars in stolen assets as recently as February 2025, Spalletta now faces significant prison time. He could spend up to ten years behind bars for computer fraud and an additional twenty years for money laundering depending on the final sentencing decision.
