Tech Fever and Debt Mountains Push Sovereign Markets Toward Breaking Point

The International Monetary Fund has issued a stark warning that government bond markets are becoming dangerously fragile, suggesting that yields could experience a chaotic spike. Speaking during the annual IMF-World Bank meetings in Bangkok, officials highlighted a volatile mix of soaring inflation, record levels of public debt, and an unexpected surge in corporate borrowing tied to the artificial intelligence boom. With global public debt nearing post-World War II highs and expected to surpass 100 percent of GDP, many advanced economies are already seeing bond yields climb to multi-decade peaks.

Adding fuel to the fire is the massive amount of capital being sucked away from government securities by AI giants and hyperscalers. These tech firms have ramped up their debt issuance significantly, competing directly with sovereign nations for investor appetite. Beyond simple borrowing, the IMF expressed deep concern over circular financing schemes where tech titans pour billions into smaller AI startups in exchange for future revenue commitments. This creates a precarious loop where any failure in AI monetization could trigger a triple blow of crashing equity values, unserviceable debt, and evaporated revenue promises.

The instability is further compounded by the behavior of hedge funds, which have dramatically increased their holdings of U.S. Treasuries using high-leverage strategies. The IMF warns that because many these funds hold identical positions, a sudden shift in sentiment could lead to a collective and disorderly exit from the market. While liquidity remains stable across most Western economies, Japan stands out as a worrying exception where market fluidity continues to decline following changes in yield curve controls. To mitigate these risks, the fund is urging governments to avoid relying on short term loans and instead extend their debt maturities before another shock hits the system.
