Financial Elite Warn of Economic Collapse Over Crypto Sanction Strategy

Israel’s most prominent economists and tech titans are sounding a dire alarm over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s suggestion that cryptocurrency could be used to bypass international banking sanctions. In a scathing joint statement, 109 experts, including Nobel laureates and former central bank officials, accused the Prime Minister of demonstrating a fundamental ignorance of global economics. They argued that relying on blockchain technology to evade sanctions is a desperate tactic typically reserved for criminal organizations rather than stable sovereign states, warns the group.

The fear among these business leaders is that such a move would signal Israel’s descent into total international isolation, mirroring the crippled economies of nations like Iran and Russia. The signatories warn that if traditional banking channels were severed, the results would be catastrophic for ordinary citizens. They envision a reality where credit cards stop working, online shopping disappears, and the critical high-tech sector—the engine of the nation’s growth—collapses due to a sudden exodus of foreign investment. Even the healthcare system could find itself unable to procure essential medications and equipment from overseas suppliers.

Adding weight to these concerns, the Bank of Israel released an unusual clarification stating explicitly that cryptocurrencies cannot serve as a viable alternative for circumventing sanctions. The central bank urged the government to prioritize preserving existing trade relationships rather than seeking digital loopholes. Despite this institutional pushback and warnings from the Manufacturers Association regarding the risk to Israel’s credit rating, Netanyahu remained defiant in recent interviews, insisting he would continue doing what he believes is right regardless of the advice provided.

As an upcoming election looms on Tuesday, this economic gamble has become a focal point for political opponents who claim the country is shifting from a conversation about prosperity to one of mere survival. Critics argue that adopting financial models associated with pariah states threatens not only millions of livelihoods but also Israel’s ability to fund its own national defense. With protesters already taking to the streets in Tel Aviv mocking the plan as an impossible substitute for basic necessities, the debate highlights a deepening rift between the government’s strategy and those who manage the nation’s wealth.
