High Net Worth Investors Pivot Toward Underserved Healthcare Markets

Ultra wealthy families significantly ramped up their venture activity in October, marking a sharp rebound after a quiet September. According to data from the private wealth intelligence platform Fintrx, family offices completed 56 direct investments last month, representing a roughly 30 percent increase over the previous period. This surge highlights a growing appetite among the world’s richest individuals to move beyond traditional assets and place strategic bets on early stage companies solving systemic societal issues.

Leading the charge was Laurene Powell Jobs through her firm, Emerson Collective, which emerged as the most active investor of the month. The organization focused heavily on health equity and medical innovation, participating in a massive 555 million dollar Series G round for Devoted Health to help the Medicare Advantage provider expand its footprint into five more states. Beyond large scale insurance providers, Powell Jobs targeted specialized data firms like BioStack and Collective X Health, the latter of which aims to dismantle the historical gender data gap by sourcing female specific research.

This trend reflects a broader shift within family office strategies where healthcare now ranks as one of the top sectors for direct investment, trailing only artificial intelligence. For many of these investors, the appeal lies in targeting overlooked markets that have been traditionally ignored by mainstream venture capital. By focusing on niches such as women’s health and caregiving infrastructure, these firms see an opportunity to generate impact while capturing value in underserved spaces.

One notable example is Pivotal Ventures, led by Melinda French Gates, which recently backed Abby Care in an 82 million dollar funding round. The startup uses AI to certify family members as paid caregivers under government programs. Erin Harkless Moore of Pivotal Ventures noted that they prioritize founders with lived experience who understand the bureaucratic hurdles of the current system. She emphasized that while areas like women’s health may lack comprehensive data and funding, those very gaps represent some of the most significant opportunities for meaningful growth today.
