6 WA Starbucks locations closing amid broader shutdown. Here’s where

Starbucks is scaling back its presence in Washington as part of a sweeping national effort to shutter 250 underperforming locations. Six stores across the state are slated to close their doors this weekend, including three in Seattle along Northwest Leary Way, Seventh Avenue inside the Nordstrom building, and South Rainier Avenue. Other affected sites include locations in Redmond on 170th Avenue NE, Spokane on West Wellesley Avenue, and Vancouver on Southeast 164th Avenue.

The domestic closures represent about one percent of the coffee giant’s total U.S. fleet and are expected to cost the company roughly 300 million dollars in restructuring charges. According to internal communications from Chief Operating Officer Mike Grams, these specific sites were chosen because they failed to meet financial targets or could not maintain the brand’s desired customer and employee experience. While the company hasn’t specified how many of these closing shops are unionized, leadership says affected workers will be relocated to other nearby stores or provided with severance packages.

This retail contraction follows a period of significant instability within Starbucks’ corporate ranks, particularly in its hometown of Seattle. Over the last year, hundreds of nonretail roles have been eliminated, including recent cuts at the SoDo headquarters targeting IT and store design teams. These reductions mirror a larger trend of tech sector layoffs hitting Seattle hard and coincide with the company’s strategic shift toward expanding operations in Tennessee.

Despite these cuts and the growth in Nashville, analysts suggest that Starbucks isn’t planning a full exodus from Washington just yet. Company representatives maintain that they remain committed to their original home base even as they streamline their physical footprint and adjust their staffing levels to better align with current economic pressures. Most of the nationwide store closures are expected to be finalized by the end of 2026.
