New crypto ATM scam protections to take effect in New Hampshire

New crypto ATM scam protections to take effect in New Hampshire

Residents of New Hampshire can breathe a bit easier starting December 16, as new safeguards designed to curb cryptocurrency ATM fraud officially take effect. Senate Bill 482, which was signed into law over the summer, aims to close regulatory gaps that have left many Granite Staters vulnerable to sophisticated financial predators. Until now, crypto kiosks in the state operated largely without oversight, leaving victims with almost no recourse once their funds vanished into digital wallets.

The new legislation introduces several friction points intended to slow down scammers and protect consumers. Most notably, the law implements a two thousand dollar daily transaction limit and requires that all first-time customer transactions be held for forty eight hours. These delays are specifically designed to give victims a window of realization, providing them precious time to discover they have been defrauded and seek help before the money is permanently gone. Additionally, those who fall prey to these schemes will now have fourteen days to request a full refund.

Law enforcement officials admit that New Hampshire became an attractive target precisely because neighboring states had already implemented similar restrictions. Manchester detective Ray Lamy noted that while other regions had regulations in place for over a year, New Hampshire remained wide open, essentially inviting bad actors to operate within its borders. This vulnerability is reflected in national trends, with the FBI reporting more than five thousand five hundred complaints involving crypto ATMs last year alone.

For people like Ken Heideman, who lost money after following instructions from a fraudulent phone alert, these laws come as a necessary warning. He described how easily he was manipulated by someone on the phone who guided him through the process of draining his own bank account via an ATM. His experience serves as a reminder that these scams can happen to anyone regardless of tech savviness, making the upcoming December deadline a critical victory for consumer protection across the state.
