Reform UK given record £36m donation by British crypto billionaire

Reform UK has received a staggering 36 million pound donation from British cryptocurrency billionaire Ben Delo, marking a record breaking sum for a single political contributor in the United Kingdom. The windfall makes Delo the largest donor in British political history by a significant margin, easily eclipsing previous contributions including a 15 million pound gift to the party from Christopher Harborne. Party leader Nigel Farage expressed gratitude for the move, stating he was humbled by Delo’s confidence in Reform as the only force capable of reversing the nation’s perceived decline.

The scale of the payment arrives amid a period of intense scrutiny for Mr. Farage, who is currently navigating a police investigation regarding overseas funding and a separate standards inquiry concerning an undeclared five million pound personal gift. While there were initial questions regarding whether Delo met residency requirements to avoid overseas donation caps, Reform officials have maintained they are confident the funds are compliant with current laws. Delo, who returned to the UK from Hong Kong, previously faced legal troubles in the United States over anti money laundering failures at his firm BitMEX, though he was later pardoned by Donald Trump.

Labour politicians have reacted with alarm to the announcement, suggesting that such massive injections of capital allow a handful of wealthy individuals to exert disproportionate influence over democratic processes. Member of Parliament Stella Creasy argued that this specific donation represents more than Labour spent during its entire general election campaign, calling for urgent legislative action to cap donations through the Representation of the People Bill. Although Prime Minister Keir Starmer has hesitated to commit to a hard cap on all contributions, the government has indicated it is exploring ways to prevent mega donors from distorting future elections.

For Ben Delo, the decision to fund Reform stems from a deep frustration with what he describes as the self deception of Britain’s ruling elites and a desire to protect free speech. An Oxford graduate and champion of various causes across the political spectrum, Delo believes that official government culture has forced citizens into dishonesty on sensitive social issues. Beyond his ties to Farage, investigations suggest Delo maintains wide reaching connections within Westminster, providing support both to populist challengers and established figures within the Conservative Party.
