A twenty two year old man admitted his role on Tuesday in one of the biggest cryptocurrency thefts in United States history, pleading guilty to conspiring with a group of friends to steal nearly a quarter billion dollars in bitcoin. Malone Lam, an eighth grade dropout originally from Singapore, now faces up to twenty years in prison after pleading guilty to federal racketeering charges. Prosecutors described Lam as a key organizer within a wider network of young men who orchestrated various crypto scams beginning in 2023, making him the eleventh person to plead guilty among eighteen total defendants.
The heist took place in August 2024 and targeted a resident of Washington, D.C., through sophisticated social engineering tactics. According to investigators, members of the conspiracy impersonated employees from Google and the Gemini crypto exchange to trick the victim into granting access to his Google Drive and sharing sensitive security codes. This manipulation allowed Lam and his associates to siphon off more than four thousand bitcoin, totaling roughly 245 million dollars.
Once the funds were secured, Lam allegedly led an extravagant laundering operation that funded a whirlwind spending spree across several cities. Authorities say he spent millions at nightclubs, including a single night in Los Angeles where he dropped over five hundred thousand dollars, while also renting luxury mansions in Miami. His appetite for high end goods included a two million dollar watch and a fleet of more than thirty exotic vehicles featuring custom Porsches, Lamborghinis, and Ferraris.
The lavish lifestyle ended abruptly just one month later when FBI agents tracked him down in Miami. Court documents reveal that an off duty police officer actually warned Lam that his arrest was imminent, leading the defendant to tell associates during recorded jail calls that he never imagined things would get this crazy. During his court appearance before U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar Kotelly, Lam struggled to recall exactly which of the dozens of sports cars he had purchased personally, telling the judge he would need some time to remember.
