How record diesel prices will rip through the U.S. economy. Trucks, rails are only the start

Motorists have spent months watching the pumps with anxiety following the outbreak of war with Iran earlier this year, but while unleaded gasoline has managed to avoid total catastrophe, diesel fuel has surged to a staggering all time high of 6.31 dollars per gallon. In some regions, like California, the cost has climbed even higher, reaching as much as 8 dollars. While the average driver might not fill their tank with diesel, economists warn that this spike is far more dangerous than rising gas prices because diesel serves as the primary circulatory system for the entire American economy.

The immediate impact is being felt by freight haulers and rail companies, but the ripple effect is already moving toward the consumer. Interestingly, those who only use unleaded gas are already paying a hidden diesel tax; because tankers rely on diesel to deliver fuel to stations, those increased transit costs are being baked into every gallon sold. Convenience store owners are currently absorbing much of these losses through thinner margins, but that relief cannot last forever. Soon, the snacks and drinks inside those stores will likely see price hikes simply because it costs more to truck them from the warehouse to the shelf.

Industry experts describe diesel as the invisible price that people ignore until it has already infected everything else. From farm equipment and food delivery to home heating and air travel via jet fuel, almost every physical good touches a diesel engine at some point in its journey. Carmit Glik of Ship4wd notes that unlike gasoline spikes which are felt instantly, diesel inflation works its way through the supply chain over several weeks before appearing in grocery bills and delivery fees. There is also a risk that smaller independent truckers will be forced out of business by these overheads, reducing overall shipping capacity and driving costs even higher.

As winter approaches, the crisis threatens to enter people’s living rooms through home heating oil, which tracks closely with diesel prices. Some advocates warn that families in the Northeast could see heating costs jump by as much as 31 percent, creating a triple threat of expensive commutes, costly groceries, and unaffordable warmth. With refinery constraints in the Gulf and ongoing geopolitical instability creating a perfect storm, analysts fear that any further disruption could push prices even higher just as millions of Americans prepare for the holiday season.
