Travis Kelce among pro athletes defrauded by Ponzi scheme that funneled funds into one stock

Kansas City Chiefs superstar Travis Kelce has been named as one of the victims in a massive multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme orchestrated by a Texas-based investment manager. The details emerged during a recent sentencing hearing in a St. Louis federal courtroom where Siddharth Jawahar, the operator of Swiftarc Capital LLC, faced justice for his fraudulent activities. While court filings did not disclose the specific amount Kelce lost, it became clear that the tight end was part of a larger group of high profile individuals targeted by the scam.

The scale of the deception was staggering, with prosecutors revealing that Jawahar swindled investors out of more than 35 million dollars between 2016 and late 2023. Rather than building the diversified portfolios he promised his clients, Jawahar dumped nearly all of the capital into a single stock, Philip Morris Pakistan. As that particular investment plummeted, he began issuing fake account statements to hide the losses and utilized funds from incoming investors to pay off older ones in a classic pyramid structure.

While some money went into the market, much of the stolen wealth funded an incredibly lavish lifestyle for Jawahar. Federal investigators found that about 10 million dollars were actually invested, while the rest paid for private jet charters, luxury apartments in New York and Austin, and exclusive club memberships. This pattern of greed didn’t just affect Kelce; previous reports have linked similar losses to several NBA players including Gary Harris, Tim Hardaway Jr., and Mason Plumlee.

Justice finally caught up with Jawahar after he pleaded guilty to three counts of wire fraud. A federal judge recently sentenced him to 11 years in prison and ordered him to pay back over 31 million dollars in restitution. For Kelce, who continues to dominate on the field in his fourteenth NFL season, this legal battle serves as a stark reminder of how even those with significant resources can fall prey to sophisticated financial predators.
