India’s large caps stuck in ‘bygone economic era’, says Bernstein, as foreign investors head for the exit

Foreign investors are increasingly turning their backs on India’s largest corporations, sparking a record-breaking exodus of capital from the world’s fastest-growing major economy. According to a recent report by global brokerage Bernstein, much of the country’s blue chip landscape represents a bygone economic era, leaving international traders with little incentive to maintain their positions. The report suggests that these industrial giants are failing to reinvent themselves in an age of rapid technological disruption, opting instead to consolidate their past achievements rather than investing in the future.

The financial fallout has been stark, with foreign portfolio investors selling off roughly 1.7 billion dollars in direct Indian equities this September alone. This brings the total amount sold this year to nearly 26 billion dollars, marking the highest outflow on record. Consequently, the Nifty 50 index has plummeted more than ten percent since January, positioning it as one of the worst performing markets globally despite India’s strong overall macroeconomic growth figures. Major players like HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries have felt the pinch, with several heavyweights now trading near fifty two week lows.

A significant disconnect has emerged between India’s broad economic success and its primary stock benchmark. While the giant firms struggle, smaller and mid cap companies are thriving in sectors like fintech and consumer technology, reporting earnings growth that dwarfs those of their larger counterparts. However, Bernstein warns that these agile newcomers aren’t yet viable alternatives for massive institutional funds due to issues with liquidity and limited float. This leaves a dangerous gap where those with the deepest pockets remain reluctant to fund critical shifts toward semiconductors and electric vehicles.

Adding to the volatility is India’s perceived vulnerability to the rise of artificial intelligence. With few local champions in AI and traditional IT services facing severe margin pressures, many analysts view India as an anti AI trade. Even internal turmoil at conglomerates like the Tata Group threatens ambitious projects such as domestic semiconductor plants. Bernstein concludes that investors should not expect a sudden return of foreign capital simply because geopolitical tensions ease or AI trends settle, suggesting that systemic structural changes within India’s corporate leadership are necessary first.
