Detroit Lions stock report: 5 risers, 11 fallers at Bills

The Detroit Lions entered the 2026 season leaning heavily on slogans like Redemption and Respect, but after a bruising trip to Buffalo, those mantras feel more like empty promises than a roadmap to success. A devastating loss in the opening of the Bills’ new stadium highlighted a troubling trend for a team that has gone 10-10 over its last twenty games. Despite high expectations, the Lions look remarkably similar to the disappointing squad from last year, struggling to find an identity while facing elite competition on short rest.

Head coach Dan Campbell finds himself under intense scrutiny as his team appeared completely unprepared for the primetime spotlight. Getting pulverized early and falling behind 21-0 is a catastrophic start for a franchise with championship aspirations. While Campbell has spent the offseason defending his staff and praising his veterans, the results on the field suggest a systemic failure in preparation. The burden now falls squarely on him to determine why his team arrived sluggish and whether his coaching staff is capable of making the necessary mid-course corrections.

Nowhere was this collapse more evident than in the performance of defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard. In just eight quarters of football this season, Sheppard’s unit has looked disorganized and fragile, offering almost no resistance to Josh Allen’s historic performance. From coverage mishaps to an utter inability to stop the run or pressure the quarterback, every facet of the defense failed simultaneously. Most alarming is Sheppard’s apparent inability to adapt during a game; once Buffalo found a weakness, they exploited it relentlessly without seeing a single countermove from Detroit.

Even the leaders in the locker room aren’t immune to the fallout. All-Pro linebacker Jack Campbell was visibly emotional after the game, taking personal responsibility for a performance that left much to be desired. As a green-dot captain, his struggles are magnified, especially when tasked with containing an MVP-caliber offense. With upcoming matchups against quarterbacks who have historically shredded this secondary, the Lions face a crossroads where simplification may be their only hope for survival before the divisional grind begins.
