Boeing has alerted regulators and airlines to a software glitch affecting some of its 737 Max aircraft, specifically impacting automated approach functions during landing procedures. According to the company, the issue typically arises after a missed approach when pilots modify a preprogrammed flight path. In these specific scenarios, pilots may need to take extra manual steps to successfully utilize automated tools on subsequent attempts. While Boeing is currently developing a permanent software update to resolve the flaw, the company emphasized that pilots are already fully trained to perform landings without relying on these automated systems.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed it is reviewing the problem and evaluating Boeing’s proposed fix, promising immediate action if any genuine safety concerns are identified. Some major carriers have already distanced themselves from the risk by avoiding the specific software version associated with the glitch. Southwest Airlines stated that none of its current fleet is equipped with the problematic version, while United Airlines noted it is not accepting new deliveries featuring the updated software until the matter is resolved.
Despite these assurances from some operators, uncertainty lingers regarding the Max 7 and Max 10 models. The smaller Max 7 was recently certified with the latest software already installed, leaving questions about whether those planes can operate using an older version. Meanwhile, Boeing continues to push for the certification of the Max 10, though customers like Alaska Airlines say they are waiting for further evaluation from both the manufacturer and federal regulators before moving forward.
This development adds fresh pressure to Boeing as it struggles to move past years of scrutiny following catastrophic failures of previous Max models. Two fatal crashes between 2018 and 2019 claimed 346 lives and were linked to flawed flight control software that has since been overhauled. With over 2,400 Max aircraft now in global service, any mention of software instability tends to draw intense focus toward the company’s quality control processes and its ongoing relationship with aviation authorities.
