Microsoft Opens Door for Thousands to Depart in New Voluntary Exit Push

Microsoft is introducing a new voluntary exit program that could potentially affect as many as 60,000 employees across several of its global hubs. According to an internal memo from chief people officer Amy Coleman, the time-limited offer is available to eligible staff at level 70 and below operating within the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and India. The move signals a shift in how the tech giant manages its workforce during a period of significant transition.

The scope of the initiative is broad, touching numerous high-profile divisions including Xbox, Windows and Devices, finance, and human resources. Those working on AI experiences and Copilot are also among those eligible, while other sectors like Cloud + AI and legal affairs are participating only partially. This widespread reach suggests the company is looking to trim overhead or realign talent across various sectors without resorting exclusively to forced redundancies.

Coleman described the approach as a way to provide greater flexibility for workers to shape their own professional futures. She noted that this strategy builds upon lessons learned from a smaller retirement program earlier this year which targeted roughly 9,000 veteran US employees. By offering a path out for those who wish to leave voluntarily, Microsoft claims it can better meet evolving business needs while allowing staff to find new opportunities elsewhere.

This latest development follows a turbulent few months for the company, coming on the heels of layoffs in July and September that heavily impacted commercial sales and the Xbox division. With reports suggesting further cuts may be on the horizon, this voluntary window appears to be an attempt by leadership to manage headcount reductions with less friction than traditional mass layoffs often cause.
