Microsoft is opening the door for tens of thousands of workers to exit the company through a new voluntary buyout program. Chief People Officer Amy Coleman detailed the initiative in a memo to staff on Monday, framing the move as a way to provide flexibility while the organization evolves. The offer targets approximately 60,000 employees across several key markets, including the United States, Canada, India, and the United Kingdom.
The program specifically applies to staff members at level 70 and below, which suggests that some mid-to-senior level personnel may find themselves among those eligible. According to Coleman, those who qualify will receive personalized emails containing specific financial packages and access to career planning resources designed to help them transition into their next professional chapter.
This latest wave of departures follows a broader trend of restructuring within the software behemoth as it leans further into artificial intelligence. Back in July, Microsoft trimmed about 4,800 positions from its commercial and Xbox gaming sectors in an effort to reduce overhead and realign its priorities for the AI era. This current strategy mirrors an early retirement scheme introduced earlier this year, which saw over thirty percent participation from eligible staff.
By opting for voluntary exits rather than mandatory layoffs, Microsoft appears to be testing a softer approach to downsizing its global footprint. Company leadership indicated that they intend to keep exploring these types of flexible departure options moving forward as they continue to reshape their workforce for a changing technological landscape.
