Constitutional Crisis Looms Over Trump Family Crypto Empire

A federal civil lawsuit filed this week alleges that President Donald Trump and his family’s cryptocurrency venture, World Liberty Financial, have corruptly profited from billions of dollars in digital currency deals. The complaint, brought by J. Benjamin Greenberg, a shareholder and former employee of rival firm Circle Internet Group, argues that these transactions violate the U.S. Constitution’s Foreign Emoluments Clause, which prohibits federal officials from accepting payments from foreign governments without congressional approval. According to the suit, no president in American history has ever exploited their office so blatantly for personal gain.

At the center of the legal battle are two specific deals involving Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the national security advisor to the United Arab Emirates. Just days before Trump took office in January 2025, an entity backed by the Sheikh reportedly purchased a forty nine percent stake in World Liberty for five hundred million dollars. While the company initially denied Trump’s involvement, subsequent financial disclosures reveal he stood to earn millions from the arrangement once he assumed the presidency. Furthermore, the lawsuit describes a scheme where an Abu Dhabi investment fund spent two billion dollars on World Liberty’s stablecoin to artificially inflate the value of Trump’s holdings.

Legal representatives for Mr. Greenberg characterize these actions as brazenly corrupt and argue that the president effectively sold out the American public for profit. They are seeking a court order requiring Trump to disclose all foreign crypto earnings and return any illegal proceeds to taxpayers. The timing of these investments has raised additional eyebrows among critics, as they coincided with administration decisions to expand UAE access to high powered American artificial intelligence chips used by firms controlled by Sheikh Tahnoon.

The White House and spokespeople for World Liberty Financial have dismissed the allegations as baseless and politically motivated. In a statement provided to CNBC, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly called the filing a frivolous attempt to revive old narratives pushed by political opponents, insisting there are no conflicts of interest involved. Meanwhile, executives at World Liberty maintain that their operations comply fully with all existing laws and regulations, signaling their intent to fight the claims in court.
