Corporate Giants Push Back Against Blockchain Trading Experiment

The push toward bringing traditional stock trading onto the blockchain has hit a significant speed bump as some of the world’s largest corporations voice their disapproval. A recent public notice revealed that sixteen major firms, including tech titans like Microsoft and Alphabet along with financial powerhouse Goldman Sachs, have formally objected to having tokenized versions of their shares traded on OKX-ICE. This emerging venue, a joint venture between crypto exchange OKX and Intercontinental Exchange, seeks to leverage the SEC’s new experimental framework to allow for around-the-clock trading via blockchain technology.

Despite the high profile of the objecting companies, Andrew Cuomo, co-chair of OKX-ICE and former Governor of New York, remains unfazed by the resistance. Speaking during a press call on Tuesday, Cuomo characterized the backlash as a completely natural reaction given the scale of the shift. He noted that since the move represents such a revolutionary change in market structure, it was expected that many companies would prefer to watch from the sidelines rather than risk being early adopters. According to Cuomo, the current setup is essentially a controlled sandbox designed specifically to let issuers decide if they want to opt in or out.

Industry experts suggest that these corporate hesitations stem from very practical concerns regarding how new markets will handle pricing and shareholder rights. Carlos Domingo, CEO of Securitize, emphasized that it is reasonable for issuers to demand clarity on investor protections and custody before committing to a digital ledger system. Similarly, Dave Hendricks of Vertalo pointed out that there is currently a lack of synchronized infrastructure between legacy exchanges and these new tokenized venues, making company objections an inevitable part of the regulatory process.

While names like McDonald’s and Caterpillar have joined the list of dissenters for now, proponents of tokenization believe this is merely an educational phase. The SEC’s innovation exemption provides a five year window for testing these models with strict caps on volume and participation. Supporters argue that once the technical rails are fully established and harmonized with existing systems, today’s skeptics may eventually find common ground with the efficiency offered by 24/7 blockchain trading.
