‘Crisis even bigger than Covid’: American business owners are barely getting by

For Jeff Vojta, the CEO of Dilworth Coffee in Raleigh, North Carolina, the recent string of global calamities feels like a relentless onslaught. From ruined Brazilian coffee crops and soaring futures to the compounding effects of international tariffs and conflict in the Middle East, the veteran distributor says he is facing a level of uncertainty he has never encountered in over three decades of business. He isn’t alone in his frustration. Across various industries, American business owners are reporting a climate so volatile that some now claim it is far worse than the peak of the pandemic. While Covid brought sudden halts and empty shelves, today’s crisis is characterized by a jagged cycle of unpredictability where prices and shipping lanes swing wildly from one week to the next.

Experts suggest this shift represents something deeper than simple logistical hiccups; it is fundamentally an energy and security problem. While members of the Trump administration argue that resolving conflicts in Iran and reopening the Strait of Hormuz will trigger a quick economic rebound and plummeting oil prices, many on the ground believe the damage has already seeped too deep into the broader economy. Core inflation continues to climb as high fuel costs bleed into service sectors—costs that rarely decrease once they have spiked. Furthermore, geopolitical tensions are compounded by environmental disasters, such as Super El Niño events and typhoons closing major ports like Shanghai, creating a perfect storm that diplomacy alone cannot fix.

The operational reality for these entrepreneurs is becoming unsustainable. Logistics veterans note that global shipping capacity has shrunk significantly as vessels are forced to reroute around Africa to avoid piracy and rebel attacks in the Red Sea. For small manufacturers like Sean Brownlee of Ravenox, who transitioned from a Marine Corps career to build an American job engine, this lack of predictability threatens his very dream. Small businesses generally absorb rising costs until they hit a breaking point, but many are now finding themselves at that edge with thin margins and customers who simply cannot afford further price hikes.

Ultimately, the stress stems from a loss of control over long term planning. Business leaders who once mapped out their sourcing two years in advance are now forced to operate on a three month window just to survive. With sales volumes swinging violently and cash reserves depleted by exorbitant shipping fees, owners describe a state of constant anxiety. If Covid was defined by fear and stagnation, this era is being defined by exhaustion and friction, leaving thousands of American business owners wondering how much longer they can possibly hold on.
