Digital Sabotage Leaves French Grocers With Millions in Spoiled Goods

Investigators in France are currently searching for the culprits behind a bizarre and costly cyberattack that saw hackers seize control of cooling systems across hundreds of supermarkets. By overriding temperature settings, the attackers turned refrigeration units into heaters, causing widespread food spoilage and even triggering fires in some locations. The chaos played out visibly on Tuesday as staff at various Paris outlets were forced to dump massive quantities of thawed meat and ruined frozen goods into industrial trash bins.

Major retailers including Carrefour, Monoprix, Intermarche, and Cooperative U were hit during the breach, affecting roughly 350 stores nationwide. While some individual shops faced losses reaching two hundred thousand euros, Intermarche CEO Thierry Cotillard described the event as unprecedented, suggesting that total national losses could climb into the tens of millions for a single day’s disruption. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu has ordered the National Cybersecurity Agency to lead the probe, while officials coordinate with European partners to determine if other countries face similar risks.

Cybersecurity experts suggest the attack was surprisingly simple to execute, targeting aging hardware provided by Danish firm Danfoss. Many of the affected units were reportedly running obsolete firmware or had reached their end-of-life stage, meaning they no longer received critical security patches. Because these controllers were connected directly to the internet for remote maintenance, they essentially acted as open doors for anyone with basic technical knowledge. Some analysts believe the lack of a ransom demand suggests this may have been a prank by amateur hackers rather than a sophisticated state actor.

Despite warnings issued months ago regarding these specific vulnerabilities, data shows that thousands of similar interfaces remain exposed globally. A scan revealed at least four thousand five hundred Danfoss interfaces still visible on the public web, many of which continue to run outdated software. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers inherent in our interconnected infrastructure, where a lapse in basic digital hygiene can quickly transform a modern supermarket into a scene of expensive waste and hazardous failures.
