Exclusive / Senate Republicans say crypto bill likely to fail

Senate Republicans are sounding the alarm over the fate of a high profile bipartisan cryptocurrency regulatory bill, suggesting it is unlikely to survive a vote when the chamber reconvenes next week. The primary sticking point remains a contentious ethics component designed to govern the president and his immediate family, a demand pushed heavily by Democrats that has seen very little progress during recent negotiations. Senator Mike Rounds told reporters that the current outlook does not look good, while Senator Thom Tillis warned that unless the White House shows more interest in bridging the gap regarding those specific ethics provisions, the legislation is headed for failure.

Despite these warnings from within the GOP ranks, the White House continues to insist that passing the CLARITY Act is essential for national security and economic leadership. A administration spokesperson described President Trump as unequivocal in his desire to see the bill passed so that the United States can outpace foreign competitors and maintain its position as a global leader in financial innovation. The administration claims it has already collaborated extensively with Congress and believes they have offered some of the most comprehensive ethics provisions ever seen in such legislation.

While some analysts suggest that a legislative collapse could trigger an influx of spending from the crypto industry into upcoming House and Senate races, not every lawmaker views digital assets as a political liability. Senator Roger Marshall noted that he hasn’t felt any pressure from his constituents regarding the matter, stating that nobody back home has reached out to him about it. This disconnect between Washington power struggles and voter priorities suggests that while the bill may be stalled in committee, it might not carry enough weight to sway voters at the ballot box.
