Federal Watchdog Uncovers Widespread Political Discrimination Among Top Wall Street Banks

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency has released a scathing report alleging that the United States’ largest financial institutions systematically discriminated against customers based on their political and religious beliefs. According to Comptroller Jonathan Gould, the agency discovered irrefutable evidence that the nation’s nine biggest banks, including giants like JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Citibank, utilized vague reputation risk policies to shut down accounts or deny services to individuals and legal businesses they deemed too partisan.

The forty seven page investigation reveals a pattern of behavior where banks distanced themselves from clients to avoid negative public perception. In one instance cited by the report, a payment processor linked to a major bank shuttered the account of a merchant selling merchandise associated with Donald Trump and the MAGA brand. Conversely, other entities were targeted for endorsing exclusively Democratic candidates. The regulator noted that while some banks claimed to apply these restrictions across the political spectrum, they effectively penalized constitutionally protected speech while favoring organizations labeled as bipartisan.

Beyond ideological targeting, the OCC found that several banks maintained restrictive policies against entire industries regardless of legality. These blacklists reportedly included companies involved in firearm manufacturing, coal mining, oil and gas exploration and digital assets. The probe was triggered by an executive order signed by President Trump in August 2025 aimed at stopping what he described as the weaponization of finance against hardworking citizens who hold dissenting views.

The fallout from these findings has already reached Capitol Hill, with Senate Banking Committee Chairman Tim Scott describing the results as damning and fundamentally un American. The extensive review process involved analyzing nearly one hundred thousand complaints and sifting through hundreds of thousands of pages of internal bank documentation. As regulators push for fair access to financial services as a mandatory right rather than a suggestion, lawmakers indicate that further congressional scrutiny into Wall Street’s lending and account practices is imminent.
