The Federal Aviation Administration has issued a stark warning to United States airlines, urging them to exercise extreme caution when operating in or near Saudi Arabian airspace. This alert comes in the wake of devastating attacks claimed by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels from Yemen, which have effectively paralyzed aviation in the kingdom’s capital. The situation reached a critical point on Saturday when a projectile slammed into a passenger terminal at King Khalid International Airport, leaving at least twelve people dead and more than three hundred others injured.
In response to the violence, King Khalid International Airport remains shuttered as carriers scramble to reroute their schedules. Many airlines have already suspended flights through the end of the week, while governments including those of the United States and Australia have officially advised their citizens to avoid traveling to the region entirely. The FAA noted that these safety risks extend across all altitudes, citing concerns over both active military engagements and potential disruptions to vital navigation systems. These warnings are currently slated to remain in effect until December 10.
While most American carriers do not maintain regular routes into Saudi Arabia, the timing creates a significant dilemma for Delta Air Lines. The company had been preparing to launch its inaugural nonstop service between Atlanta and Riyadh on October 23. Although CEO Ed Bastian previously emphasized that safety would be the deciding factor in whether the route proceeds, a spokesperson indicated as of Sunday evening that Delta had not yet altered its plans despite the escalating danger on the ground.
