Getting a Piece of the AI Pie Before Anthropic Hits Wall Street

With its highly anticipated public debut slated for mid-November, Anthropic is quickly becoming one of the most coveted targets for investors. The creator of the Claude chatbot is expected to enter the market with a staggering valuation between 1.5 trillion and 2 trillion dollars, which would instantly place it among the ten most valuable companies on earth. While that price tag seems steep for a company still operating in the red, its growth trajectory is undeniable, with recent third quarter revenues jumping forty five percent over the previous period.

For those who do not want to wait for the official IPO bell, Tom Essaye of Sevens Report Research has identified several funds providing early access. Options range from high conviction plays like the Fundrise Innovation Fund and Destiny Tech100, which hold significant weightings in the company, to more diversified vehicles like the Corgi MANGOS ETF and Tema Photonics and Optical ETF. Even Cathie Wood’s ARK Venture Fund offers exposure, though at a much smaller percentage of its total portfolio compared to some specialized venture funds.

However, chasing this pre-IPO hype comes with significant caveats that cautious investors should consider. Many of these options are not standard ETFs; closed end or interval funds can be far less liquid, sometimes restricting redemptions to once per quarter. Furthermore, these specialized vehicles often carry hefty expense ratios that can climb as high as nearly three percent, eating into potential gains far more than a traditional index fund would. Some even rely on complex derivatives and swaps to simulate ownership since they cannot buy shares directly from a private entity.

Market history also suggests that timing remains everything when dealing with tech giants. Data from Truist indicates that many high profile technology stocks suffer a sharp decline shortly after their initial surge, with an average drawdown of fifty five percent within the first year of trading. Recent volatility seen in other space and AI ventures serves as a reminder that while revenue growth is impressive, the gap between a massive opening valuation and long term stability can be a rocky ride for shareholders.
