GM launching new customer software experience with redesigned Chevy, GMC pickups

General Motors is preparing to overhaul the way drivers interact with their vehicles, starting later this year with a complete redesign of the software experience in its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks. The automaker is aiming for a user interface that feels more like a modern smartphone, focusing on intuitive controls and deep customization. This shift follows a strategic internal reorganization where GM moved its digital experience operations from the software department to the design team, now led by former Apple and Google executive Sebastian Bauer.

Bauer explains that the primary goal is to reduce cognitive load for the driver by surfacing necessary information exactly when it is needed. Instead of forcing users to dig through multiple menus or screens, the system is designed to proactively offer relevant controls for common tasks, such as opening a garage door or managing incoming calls. This effort toward simplicity comes at a time when vehicle interiors are becoming increasingly digitized and complex.

One of the most notable technical upgrades involves Super Cruise, GM’s advanced driver assistance system. For the first time, the instrument cluster will visually represent surrounding objects, including other cars and pedestrians. According to Bauer, providing this visual confirmation ensures that drivers feel confident knowing the vehicle accurately perceives its environment while operating in hands-free mode.

The company is also tackling long-standing frustrations regarding how smartphones integrate with car dashboards. Rather than letting Apple CarPlay or Android Auto take over the entire display—a point of contention in recent reliability studies—GM is introducing a window-in-window approach. This allows phone projection apps to coexist alongside native vehicle features on one screen. While currently debuting in high-end pickups, GM expects to roll out this new digital ecosystem across its wider fleet of vehicles in the coming years.
