GM’s $91,100 Escalade faces new scrutiny over engine failures

For a driver, the worst kind of recall is not necessarily the one that sends you to the dealership.

This is the one that might not end there.

Federal safety authorities have expanded their investigation of nearly a million General Motors (GM) cars over engine failures connected to the automaker’s 6.2-liter L87 V8.

The examination encompasses some of GM’s best-known and expensive vehicles, including the Cadillac Escalade; Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe, and Suburban; and GMC Sierra 1500 and Yukon from the 2021 through the 2026 model years, according to Car Dealership Guy.

The immediate concern for owners is simple: GM recalled more than 600,000 vehicles for the problem in 2025, yet complaints continued after recall work was done.

GM has received nearly 7,000 complaints of engine failures in vehicles that had already undergone the earlier recall remedy, according to Reuters.

The concern for investors is different.

GM’s core North American business is its full-size pickup trucks and SUVs. A lengthy safety investigation involving certain nameplates may result in higher warranty costs, dealer traffic, regulatory scrutiny, and reputational impact, even before authorities decide whether another recall is needed.

That makes for a customer concern and a stock narrative.

GM’s earlier L87 V8 recall was supposed to solve the problem

The recall affected about 597,000 vehicles from the 2021 through 2024 model years.

Some connecting rods and crankshafts may have manufacturing faults that might cause engine damage or failure, federal records indicated.

This is not a minor nuisance for an owner. If the engine dies while the car is moving, the driver can lose propulsion, and this can increase the likelihood of a crash.

Warning indicators include engine knocking, a check-engine light, hesitancy, odd shifting, higher-than-normal engine RPMs, or diminished propulsion.

But the more pertinent question now is whether the 2025 cure effectively addressed the underlying problem.

GM’s recall process included dealers inspecting engines. Some failed engines were replaced, and vehicles that passed inspection were modified, including the use of higher viscosity engine oil.

In its probe, the company uncovered more than 28,000 complaints, with over half concerning suspected loss of propulsion, Reuters reported. GM also found 12 wrecks and 12 minor injuries that might be related to the problem, as well as 42 reports of fires that may be connected.

That background is important because NHTSA has now escalated the issue to an engineering analysis, a more serious phase of a defect inquiry.

That doesn’t imply another recall is necessarily coming, but it’s a required step before regulators can require more repairs or a broader recall.

For a Silverado or Escalade owner who has already invested time hauling the car back to a dealership, that uncertainty can be aggravating.

And the more repair campaigns, the bigger the price tag for GM.

Why the GM probe matters to the stock

GM’s most profitable vehicles include a higher share of trucks and large SUVs. That’s what adds the investor aspect to this probe, aside from the recall itself.

A safety risk with a low-volume car may never show up in the financials.

An issue with the Silverado, Sierra, Yukon, Tahoe, Suburban, and Escalade is difficult to shrug off, since those vehicles are such a big part of GM’s U.S. product mix.

That doesn’t mean GM will take a material financial hit yet.

No new recall covers all the nearly 1 million vehicles under review, and regulators have not determined that the earlier repair was successful. Still, the potential pressure points are obvious.

More engine replacements would increase warranty expenses. More trips to the dealership could mean more servicing costs. A wider recall can also impact owner confidence and hurt resale values for some models, especially when purchasers are left wondering whether a repaired engine is genuinely sound.

For investors, it’s one more element to watch along with price, incentives, EV spending, and North American margins.

Thousands of GM engine complaints keep recall issue alive

The NHTSA has received 499 complaints about the engine problem.

Regulators also have another 191 reports concerning vehicles with the same L87 engine that were not included in the 2025 recall, Reuters said.

That’s especially significant. If similar errors are occurring outside the original recall group, regulators may need to consider if the initial scope was too restrictive.

GM said it continues to work with NHTSA and is not telling owners to stop driving these vehicles right away.

The practical step is to verify the vehicle identification number for an outstanding recall and pay attention to any engine warning signals.

NHTSA allows owners to look up open recalls by VIN or license plate, and recall-related repairs are typically free.

GM engine probe: what owners and investors should know

  • Nearly 1 million vehicles: Approximate size of the expanded NHTSA investigation, Reuters reported
  • 597,000 vehicles: Approximate size of GM’s 2025 recall, as Car Dealership Guy noted
  • Nearly 7,000 complaints: Engine-failure complaints GM received after recall work
  • 499 complaints: Reports received directly by NHTSA
  • 191 additional reports: Failures involving the same engine outside the original recall, according to Car and Driver
  • Key models: Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, and Escalade
  • Engine: GM’s 6.2-liter L87 V8
  • Consumer risk: Potential engine failure and loss of propulsion
  • Investor risk: Possible additional warranty expense, recall costs, and reputational pressure

The greatest question today is whether GM’s prior remedy was enough.

For drivers, the answer might mean the difference between another dealership appointment and a new car. For GM stockholders, it might be the difference between what begins as a technical engine examination and turns into a bigger financial headache.

That’s why this isn’t simply another recall tale. It sits directly at the intersection of what GM owners drive every day and what GM investors are betting on.
