Intel’s AI Surge Not Enough to Offset PC Market Gloom

Intel’s AI Surge Not Enough to Offset PC Market Gloom

Intel shares took a massive dive recently, plummeting nearly 29 percent after the chipmaker issued a sobering outlook for the fourth quarter. The crash comes as a sharp reversal for a stock that had been on an incredible tear earlier this year, climbing 150 percent on the back of agentic artificial intelligence and a sudden spike in demand for server CPUs. While the company reported solid third quarter revenue of 16.5 billion dollars, investors were spooked by guidance that fell well short of analyst expectations.

The numbers tell a story of two very different companies operating under one roof. On one hand, Intel is seeing its strongest data center growth in fifteen years, with revenue in that segment surging 78 percent to 7.3 billion dollars. This boom is being driven by AI agents and tight supply chains that have pushed server CPU demand to new heights. However, this success is being undermined by a struggling PC market and a foundry business that continues to bleed cash, posting a staggering 1.9 billion dollar loss in the most recent quarter.

Adding to the turmoil is a projected decline in PC units through 2027, driven by higher prices and tightened IT budgets. Intel also faces a direct financial blow of about 600 million dollars over the next six months due to an explosion at one of its fabrication plants in Israel. While gross margins have shown signs of recovery, these operational headwinds make it difficult to see a clear path to stability in the near term.

Despite the current price drop making the stock look more affordable than it was during its peak, many analysts remain wary. Intel continues to lose market share to rivals like AMD and ARM-based processors, meaning it may not deserve a premium valuation even after such a collapse. With significant inventory corrections expected to hit in the coming months and persistent losses in its manufacturing arm, there are likely more secure ways to play the AI trend than betting on a turnaround for this legacy giant.
