Four of the biggest names in artificial intelligence are facing a legal battle after a lawsuit filed Friday in California alleged they entered into an illegal pact to throttle the speed of their technological breakthroughs. The suit, brought before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, claims that Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceXAI, and Google violated antitrust laws by coordinating a slowdown in AI development. According to the filing, this secret alignment effectively robbed paying subscribers of the full value of their monthly fees by stifling the very innovation they were paying for.
The heart of the accusation centers on events surrounding September 12, when Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay advocating for industrywide deceleration to prioritize safety over raw speed. On that same day, CEOs Sam Altman and Elon Musk along with Google DeepMind chair Demis Hassabis publicly signaled their agreement with Amodei’s proposal. However, lawyers for the plaintiffs suggest the conspiracy started much earlier, pointing to a July 2026 statement signed by high ranking employees across multiple labs acknowledging a dangerous competitive pressure that prevented any single company from slowing down alone without risking its market share.
Lead attorney Nick Rowley argued that while individual companies are free to prioritize safety on their own terms, using collective agreements as a shortcut avoids true accountability and harms consumers. He warned that allowing some of the world’s most powerful for profit entities to dictate safety protocols through private deals could eventually result in technology spinning out of human control altogether. This sentiment echoes concerns from political figures like Senator Josh Hawley, who has expressed strong opposition to granting tech giants antitrust exemptions that could facilitate collusion under the guise of security.
Adding another layer of complexity is the current political climate regarding AI regulation. While some industry leaders hoped for government mediation or specific waivers to allow these safety discussions, President Donald Trump has dismissed such calls as part of a conspiracy. Trump recently questioned why executives would seek regulations that could potentially bankrupt them and indicated his intention to appoint an AI czar to ensure American labs continue to outpace international competitors, particularly China. As of Saturday evening, none of the accused companies had issued formal responses to the allegations.
