Starbucks to close 250 stores: ‘Difficult decision’

Starbucks is preparing to shutter around 250 of its North American locations, according to a public statement released Thursday by Chief Operating Officer Mike Grams. In a letter addressed to the company’s employees, known as partners, Grams described the move as a difficult decision but one necessitated by a careful review of the brand’s massive footprint. While the vast majority of their 18,000 regional stores remain profitable, leadership determined that these specific sites were unable to meet financial expectations or provide the consistent customer experience the company demands.

Though the closures represent only about one percent of its total North American presence, the ripple effects will be felt across various local communities and staff members. Grams acknowledged that the news would be challenging for those directly impacted, emphasizing that the company simply did not see a viable path toward acceptable performance at these particular addresses. These operational cuts come during a period of strategic realignment for the coffee giant as it evaluates how to best serve its clientele in an evolving market.

The store closures arrive amid a separate wave of corporate turbulence for Starbucks, following a significant legal battle over diversity initiatives in Florida. The company recently reached a blockbuster settlement with the state, agreeing to pay one million dollars and abandon race- and sex-based goals or quotas in its employment practices nationwide. Under this agreement, which extends beyond Florida borders, Starbucks must ensure that hiring and promotions are based strictly on merit and qualifications rather than demographic targets.

Adding to these pressures, the company is now facing a new class action lawsuit centered on its menu pricing. The legal challenge alleges that Starbucks discriminates against lactose intolerant customers by adding surcharges for non-dairy milk alternatives. Between navigating high-stakes litigation regarding workforce policy and managing consumer complaints over product accessibility, the coffee chain finds itself balancing complex social and legal hurdles alongside its current efforts to trim underperforming assets from its portfolio.
