Toys ‘R’ Us to open 120 new US stores this holiday season

Childhood nostalgia is getting a massive boost this winter as Toys R Us announces an ambitious plan to open 120 new standalone stores across the United States just in time for the holiday rush. This aggressive expansion will quadruple the company’s current fleet of independent locations, bringing the total from 40 up to 160. While the retailer has not yet released a full map of exactly where these new storefronts will pop up, the move signals a confident return to the American suburbs nearly a decade after the brand famously collapsed under billions of dollars in debt and shuttered its doors nationwide.

These upcoming stores aim to be more than just aisles of plastic; they are designed as experiential hubs for modern shoppers. Alongside staples like LEGO, Barbie, and Pokemon, some locations will feature integrated cafes and candy shops to keep families lingering longer. Most notably, the company is leaning into digital culture by introducing Creator Studios. These specialized spaces allow influencers and content creators to film product reveals and host live launch events, starting at high traffic destinations like the Mall of America and American Dream in New Jersey.

The road back from bankruptcy has been long and winding since the company first filed for Chapter 11 protection in 2017. After several failed attempts at small scale returns between 2019 and 2021, WHP Global took over the brand and pivoted toward a diversified strategy. Rather than betting everything on giant warehouses, they rebuilt their presence through strategic partnerships, placing hundreds of shop in shops inside Macy’s department stores and venturing into unconventional spaces like airport terminals and Navy Exchange locations.

This latest surge represents one of the most significant gambles in recent retail history as Toys R Us tries to reclaim its crown during the most competitive shopping window of the year. By blending traditional brick and mortar browsing with social media integration, the company hopes to attract both nostalgic parents and a new generation of digitally native children. With a global empire already generating over two billion dollars in annual sales across dozens of countries, this domestic push is clearly intended to cement the brand’s permanence on American soil once again.
