Warren Buffett steps down as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway: ‘Father Time always wins’

Warren Buffett, the legendary architect of one of the most successful investment legacies in history, has officially stepped down as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway. In a candid letter to shareholders released Friday, the 96-year-old investor admitted that father time always wins, though he noted that time had been generous enough to let him see his sprawling conglomerate reach an unprecedented level of stability. While Buffett transitions to the role of chairman emeritus and remains a member of the board, his son Howard Buffett will take over as chairman. This move follows a carefully laid succession plan designed to split the operational leadership from the stewardship of the company’s unique corporate identity.

The transition marks the final chapter of a gradual handover that began when Greg Abel assumed the role of CEO roughly nine months ago. According to Buffett, while Abel manages the daily machinery of the business, Howard will serve as the guardian of the culture and values that define Berkshire. Describing Howard’s role almost like an insurance policy for shareholders, Buffett emphasized that these intangible assets are worth more than any figure listed on a balance sheet. It is a poignant conclusion to a career that saw a failing textile mill transformed into a trillion dollar juggernaut employing nearly 400,000 people across various industries.

Despite his departure from the chair, Buffett remained remarkably active until the end. From directing massive investments into Alphabet to maintaining a five day weekly office schedule despite physical setbacks like a broken leg and declining eyesight, he continued to influence the firm’s trajectory well into his nineties. Even during his 96th birthday celebrations, he maintained his trademark wit, joking that his one year old great grandson was now moving significantly faster than he was. His track record speaks for itself, having delivered compounded annual returns that nearly doubled those of the S&P 500 over six decades.

However, Greg Abel inherits the throne at a challenging moment for Berkshire shares, which have lagged behind the broader market rally this year. Investors are now closely watching how Abel deploys the company’s staggering cash reserve of over 365 billion dollars to drive future growth. While there is pressure to match Buffett’s intuitive brilliance in capital allocation, Buffett expressed absolute confidence in his successor, stating that Abel has already exceeded expectations that were sky high from the start. As he closes this era of American capitalism, Buffett says he looks forward to simply being another shareholder alongside millions of others.
