Washington Tightens Tech Grip With New Ban on DeepSeek Software

The Trump administration has officially barred Chinese AI startup DeepSeek from all civilian government agency systems, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing technological cold war between the United States and China. In an order released Monday by the Department of Homeland Security, federal civilian bodies including the State, Justice, and Treasury departments must now scrub any DeepSeek related technology from their networks. This directive extends beyond direct software usage to include any third party tools or services built upon the company’s architecture.

Washington justifies the sweeping move by pointing to severe security risks associated with the AI provider. According to the Department of Homeland Security, these models create numerous threat vectors that could allow Chinese authorities to harvest sensitive American data or exploit cybersecurity flaws. Officials specifically highlighted previous research into DeepSeek’s mobile applications which revealed critical vulnerabilities, warning that continued use could compromise information regarding U.S. citizens and classified government initiatives.

This decision is far from isolated, acting instead as the culmination of a series of incremental restrictions since early 2025. While the Department of Defense was excluded from this specific order because it already maintains its own rigid protocols, other sectors had already begun distancing themselves. Last year, Congress limited DeepSeek’s presence within intelligence communities, while various Commerce Department bureaus had previously forbidden employees from installing the software on official devices.

Beijing responded swiftly through its foreign ministry, characterizing the ban as an unnecessary politicization of science and trade. Spokesperson Mao Ning stated that China would continue to protect its corporate interests and criticized what she described as an over generalization of national security concerns used to stifle competition. Despite this friction, some executive agencies may still seek temporary exemptions from the mandate provided they submit a formal written justification to federal authorities within sixty days.
