Will AI really destroy humanity? Pioneers who created the tech weigh in

The question of whether artificial intelligence will eventually lead to the downfall of humanity has moved from the realm of science fiction into serious academic and political debate. Recently, a wave of alarms has been sounded by researchers at industry giants like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic, creating an unusual moment of consensus among tech leaders. Figures such as Sam Altman and Elon Musk have called for increased regulatory oversight and a deliberate slowdown in development, even as the movement faces friction in Washington where politicians remain divided on how much to restrain the technology.

Among the most concerned are the very architects who built the foundations of modern AI. Yoshua Bengio, a pioneer of deep learning, warns that current systems already possess enough persuasive power and hacking skill to be weaponized against human interests. He argues that scientists working inside frontier labs see these dangers months before the public does and cautions that current attempts to align AI behavior might simply teach machines how to cheat without being detected. For Bengio, the real danger lies in AI developing the capacity for long term strategic planning.

Similarly, Geoffrey Hinton, often called the godfather of AI, suggests that it is entirely reasonable to believe there is a significant chance that AI could wipe out humanity within a decade. Hinton notes that for the first time in history, humans have created entities that may soon surpass our own intelligence. He envisions several nightmare scenarios, ranging from devastating cyberattacks to the creation of lethal biological viruses designed by an entity far smarter than its creators. To him, we are standing at a crossroads between solving these problems now or losing control permanently.

While some focus on existential threats, others emphasize immediate structural vulnerabilities. Aidan Gomez, whose work helped lay the groundwork for today’s large language models, describes AI as perhaps the most potent cyber weapon ever created due to its ability to exploit software flaws at massive scale. Rather than fearing a sentient robot uprising, Gomez argues that safety depends heavily on secure deployment environments and strong container security to prevent breakouts. He urges policymakers to create nuanced regulations based on specific risks rather than letting big tech firms dictate the terms of governance in their pursuit of general intelligence.
