Federal Regulators Slam Bank of America With Massive Penalty Over Compliance Gaps

Bank of America has been hit with a staggering 1.2 billion dollar fine after federal regulators discovered systemic failures in the institution’s ability to track and report money laundering. The US Treasury Department revealed on Tuesday that the banking giant neglected to flag more than 5 billion dollars in suspicious activity, including roughly 1 billion dollars linked to severe national security threats and illicit finance. Most concerningly, officials noted that the bank missed red flags involving Chinese laundering networks and trade-based schemes operating near the southwest border.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that when a financial entity of this magnitude ignores its legal obligations, it places the entire American financial infrastructure at risk. Investigators found that Bank of America had essentially outsourced its vigilance, relying too heavily on tips from law enforcement and other banks rather than utilizing its own internal monitoring systems. This lack of proactivity led to what authorities described as a willful violation of the Bank Secrecy Act, specifically regarding how the firm managed foreign correspondent accounts.

The massive payout is split across multiple regulatory bodies, featuring a record breaking 750 million dollar penalty from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Additionally, the Office of Foreign Assets Control flagged nearly five hundred violations related to sanctions programs targeting Russia, Iran, and various terrorist organizations globally. While some of these specific infractions were deemed non egregious, they contributed to a broader pattern of negligence within the bank’s compliance framework.

Timing played a critical role in the announcement, which arrived just hours before the company was scheduled to release its quarterly earnings results. In a statement accompanying the news, Bank of America acknowledged that the fine would shave about 17 cents per share off its net income for the third quarter. Company representatives insisted they are now fully committed to fixing these gaps and have already poured significant personnel and resources into their remediation efforts to satisfy federal regulators.
