Inside Job: Engineering Lead Accused of Spying on OpenAI Executives

Federal authorities have arrested a former OpenAI engineering lead after he allegedly planted a hidden recording device in an executive conference room at the company’s San Francisco headquarters. Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35 year old Saudi national, is accused of attempting to covertly capture sensitive discussions regarding the firm’s pursuit of super intelligence technology. According to court documents, the device was cleverly disguised within toilet paper and plugged into a USB port behind a television, where it remained until staff discovered it on September 30.

The investigation reveals a calculated effort to breach corporate secrecy. Prosecutors allege that Alfozan used internal productivity tools to map out leadership locations and meeting schedules before installing the bug. Even more striking were findings tied to a chatbot account belonging to his spouse, which was reportedly used to generate instructions on building encrypted audio recorders and remotely accessing devices just days before the incident occurred. Security footage later showed Alfozan lingering near the restricted area despite having no authorization to be there.

OpenAI claims that their own artificial intelligence played a pivotal role in solving the mystery, helping them analyze the sophisticated hardware—which featured advanced encryption meant to evade detection—and trace it back to the employee. While the company stated there is currently no evidence that source code or customer data was stolen, FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized that protecting such innovations is a critical priority for national security given the strategic importance of super intelligence.

Alfozan, who joined OpenAI in 2025 following stints at Meta and Nash, has been terminated from his position and now faces up to five years in prison if convicted. This scandal arrives during a turbulent period for the AI giant, coming shortly after the dismissal of three safety researchers over separate violations of sensitive information policies. For now, OpenAI maintains that its security protocols are robust enough to handle threats ranging from rogue insiders to foreign state actors.
