Stock futures fall as investors weigh calls for AI slowdown, oil gains: Live updates

Wall Street opened on a shaky note Monday as investors grappled with a sudden wave of caution regarding the artificial intelligence boom. Major indices all dipped, with the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 leading the decline following unexpected warnings from industry leaders. The mood shifted after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for a deliberate slowdown in AI development to address critical safety risks, a sentiment echoed by other tech figures. Adding to the anxiety, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman suggested that launching an initial public offering this year would be ill advised, sending ripples through the sector.

The reaction was swift among semiconductor giants and AI darlings. Nvidia saw its shares slide 3 percent, while others like Broadcom and AMD faced steeper losses. Some analysts suggest this cooling period might actually benefit the market in the long run by stabilizing capital expenditures and improving free cash flow, but others warn that these anxieties could weigh on corporate profits for weeks to come. Political tension further complicated the landscape as President Donald Trump took to social media to dismiss calls for tighter regulation, arguing instead that strong leadership is the only guardrail necessary for the technology.

Beyond the tech turmoil, energy markets provided another source of volatility as oil prices surged. Crude futures climbed after Saudi Arabia closed a strategic pipeline bypassing the Strait of Hormuz, pushing West Texas Intermediate above 103 dollars per barrel. This spike comes amid escalating conflicts in the Middle East, creating a challenging environment for stocks that have already struggled with rising fuel costs throughout the previous week.

Adding to the pressure is a looming decision from the Federal Reserve during its September policy meeting this week. Treasury yields hit multiyear highs on Monday morning, with the 10 year note touching 5 percent for the first time since late 2023. With traders pricing in a high probability of another rate hike, investors remain on edge, waiting to see if the central bank will tighten further just as seasonal weakness typically begins to set into the broader equity markets.
